OPPOSITION TO CHRIST

As we came to the end of the last century, there was an air of positive anticipation about the new millennium. But at the same time many of the Christian churches world-wide seemed to be very apprehensive. They believe that a powerful, dangerous man called "Anti-Christ" is going to rise to the position of world leader enforcing peace and persecuting Christianity. With the new millennium many people wondered if that man might now come on the scene.

Do you fear the coming of anti-Christ?

The Bible contains many prophecies which indicate that the next 1000 years will be very different from past ages - and we are sure that does not surprise you! But do you know that the Bible has nothing to say about an individual, all-powerful evil tyrant ruling over that future age?

All the Bible information naming anti-Christ is contained in four quotations, all from the apostle John's first and second letters.

The first (in 1 John 2 v 18-19) talks about many anti-Christs having come already - these can be identified as those who have become Christians but have subsequently turned their backs on it.

The second quotation, a few verses further on, says,
"Who is the liar? It is the man who denies Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the anti-Christ he denies the Father and the Son." (1 John 2 v 22-23)

The third says:
Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. (1 John 4 v 3)

And lastly:
"Many deceivers who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the anti-Christ."
(2 John v 7)

From these descriptions of anti-Christ, we see that it is not one individual, but that it is a title for people who, claiming to be Christians, have turned their backs on the true teachings of God, as found in the Bible.

Clearly the Bible says you have nothing to fear from the anti-Christ described in its pages. Our concern is that you keep faith with God and hold fast to the truth in His word.
